“We’re number 5 on Freebird Records Irish Playlist”
Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Autumn Owls started out with Adam Browne (bass) and Gary McFarlane (singer/guitarist) who met while attending the same school. Like a lot of teenagers in the ’90s, they bought guitars and taught themselves how to play. Once in college they joined forces with drummer Will Purtill. “It was then that we began (officially) ‘playing in a band,’” McFarlane says. “We were pretty awful when I look back, but I suppose it was all part of the learning curve.” Today their sound has developed into warm folk-rock infused with atmospheric, experimental, and chilly undertones.
Though they have only been around for a short time, they have already managed to drop a few critically acclaimed EPs including Insomnia Lodge and On the Trail of the Disappearing, which has led to opportunities to perform alongside bands such as Real Estate and DeVotchKa. They also have made appearances at festivals like SXSW, CMJ, CMW, NXNE. In 2010 the band got down to business reworking demo material that would become the 12 songs of Between Buildings, Toward The Sea, a record that pays homage to their coastal home of Dublin.
