Empress Of is, according to Stereogum, a “self-consciously mysterious new gasping-keyboard wistful-pop project from Brooklyn resident Lorely Rodriguez.” Self-dubbed as a “project of sight & sound,” the enigmatic artist has released a variety of projects over the past few months, including her debut 7”, released in early November of last year. The A-side single “Champagne” was accompanied by a striking music video that features an extreme close-up of Rodriguez consuming a watermelon. The B-side, “Don’t Tell Me,” has logged almost 45,000 plays on Soundcloud in the short 3 months since its release.
Empress Of’s “sight & sound” duality is also on display in the set of 11 one-minute long demos she released on YouTube, titled simply “colourminutes.” Each video is comprised of nothing more than a solid-colored screen, accompanied by varying degrees of vocal experimentation, synth melodies, and haunting harmonies.
Empress Of is set to release a debut EP in the coming months via Terrible Records. Check out the delectable video for “Champagne,” and be sure to catch Empress Of performing live at the Stopover!
