If you’re trying to find info on Naomi Punk, an Internet search will quickly reveal . . . well, not much at all. Sure, you’ll come across a couple of interviews and a few album reviews, but don’t expect to find a Facebook page or a Twitter feed. The band remains somewhat shrouded in mystery, and that’s the way the Olympia/Seattle-based punk trio likes it. The band, consisting of guitarists Travis Coster and Neil Gregerson and drummer Nick Luempert, started playing together in 2009, when all three were still in high school. The group self-recorded and released their first album, The Feeling, in April 2012, and quickly became mainstays of the Seattle scene. The album was re-released in November 2012 by Captured Tracks.
Hailing from the home of grunge, references to “the Seattle sound” abound when talking about Naomi Punk. But the boys aren’t all that quick to shrug such references off, and tinges of early Nirvana can definitely be heard in the band’s heavily-distorted guitars and gargled, lo-fi vocal style.
Along with a nation-wide tour which includes a stint at SXSW, Naomi Punk is hard at work on a second album. Be sure to catch these up-and-comers at the Stopover!
