The Uniter, Winnipeg’s weekly urban journal describes Royal Canoe: “Royal Canoe have established themselves as musical mad scientists, throwing rock, pop and hip hop into a blender to create catchy-as-hell, dance floor-ready songs with odd time signatures and distorted vocals. Think of them as the child that would result, however inexplicably, if the Beatles, Peter Gabriel, Vampire Weekend, Outkast and Fever Ray had a hymn sing followed by an orgy.” And in fact the sound of Royal Canoe does range across this wide variety. From their beat-driven “Show Me Your Eyes” to the more psychedelic “Summer Sweat,” Royal Canoe has a sound for each mood and environment. To create these sounds, according to the band, they are armed with falsettos, guitars, effects pedals, drums, basses, tambourines, shakers and a five-keyboard super-weapon. Royal Canoe play lyrically sharp pop songs that move people and make people move.
