Originally formed in late 2000, Vietnam is one of those bands that likes to fly under the radar. Though their output over the past 12 years hasn’t exactly been prolific, for Vietnam, it’s quality over quantity. Their debut EP, The Concrete’s Always Grayer on the Other Side of the Street, was released in 2004, followed by 3 EPs released on Brooklyn’s The Social Registry label. These mini-records — and a hefty amount of cross-country touring — culminated in the band’s first full-length release, 2007′s eponymous Vietnam. Although the record was a critical success, Vietnam disappeared following the record’s release, leaving fans scratching their heads and wondering if the band would ever return.

After a long break of exploring his interest in ambient analog synth soundscapes on the West Coast, founding member Michael Gerner has indeed returned in full force, regrouping with a brand new lineup to form the latest incarnation of Vietnam. The group is set to release its second full-length album titled an A.merican D.ream on February 26 via Mexican Summer records.

Vietnam counts Bob Dylan, John Lennon, the Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo among their influences. With a unique sound that Gerner describes as “apocalyptic street blues,” Vietnam is one band you will not want to miss at this year’s Stopover!
