It’s always the weekend before The SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. For 2013, the dates are Thursday, March 7th through Saturday, March 9th.
We started the festival in 2011 as a way for bands traveling down I-95 en route to SXSW to stop and play a show in a cool, small Southern city known for it’s hospitality. From there, it kind of spread like wild fire.
You betcha! And many more to be announced.
-On Thursday, March 7, 2013,we kick things off with our opening night concert and art exhibition featuring band posters created by local students and artists and a HOT, HOT, HOT band.
-Our headiner act for late Thursday evening is none other that Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth premiering his new project Chelsea Light Moving.
-On Friday, March 8th, 2013 there’s gonna be a FREE concert in beautiful Forsyth Park featuring of Montreal. For real.
-On Saturday, March 9th, 2013 we’re throwing a Soul Clap Dance Off party and competition with famed New York DJ Jonathan Toubin spinning rare ‘60’s soul vinyl. Start practicing. Oh, and The Whigs play Saturday night as well. Choices! So many choices.
Savannah Stopover takes place in multiple venues across the historic district. All are in walking distance to each other or a short pedicab ride away. Our venues are small, cool and uniquely Savannah.
We’ve scoured the globe for the hottest up and comers with a few of your favorites sprinkled in. It’s all about discovery. We have bands coming in from Melbourne Australia, London, Montreal, The Netherlands and ports closer to home. It’s great fun! Check out our music player on the home page of the website and find your new favorite band.
We cut a wide swath when it comes to musical styles. Indie Rock, Pop, Dance, Folk, Hip Hop, Electronica, Blue Grass, Singer Songwriter, Country Rock, etc, etc. We guarantee you’ll see at least one glockenspiel and someone playing a saw. Oh yeah, and you’ll dance a lot.
Generally between 75 and 100.
Full lineup will be up in January. Schedule will follow shortly after that. Don’t dis the schedule once it’s up. We wring our hands trying to make it perfect to avoid the dreaded “why in God’s name did they put band x playing at the same time as band y?”. We want to see all of these bands too!
You’ve got options. All the info is here.
3 Day Festival Passes: Early Bird tickets @$50, Regular Price @$75
Single Day Passes: $30. These get you access to every concert on that date.
VIP Passes: $120. More info below on these bad boys.
Most of our venues are small to mid-size so we reserve them for our pass holders. We do offer tickets at the door for most shows but only after all VIP, 3 day and single day pass holders are an, space permitting. Most of these individual shows are priced at $10- $20 depending on the band(s) so it really is a better deal to get a single day or 3 day pass and hop around from venue to venue- it’s all about discovery!
(FYI- this is the same ticketing model they use at SXSW and many other venue driven festivals. Our advice, arrive early to shows you really want to see and be ready with your picks for Plan B. Some of our best festival moments are catching a band we’d never heard of because we couldn’t get in to see the band we originally wanted.)
No, but you can purchase a Friday and Saturday day pass that will get you into every weekend concert, space permitting. Day passes are $30 but if you hurry, you can buy an early bird 3 day pass for $50.
Average high is 71, but due to global warming, it may be warmer. March is theheight of spring in Savannah with nice afternoons, cool evenings. A great time all around.
Not unless it’s this dog and his name is Bobby Jr. (OK, obscure reference for Eels fans)
Yes, as long as you stay in the historic district. All of our venues are located within this district. All drinks must be in a 16 oz opaque plastic cup. The door guy at all bars downtown will give you a cup as you walk out the door to experience your next band! And BTW, you better be 21!
Pre-purchasing a 3 day or single day pass is your best bet. Occasionally tickets are available at the door, but only after all pass holders have entered. Most of our venues have a capacity of 300 or less.
About half of our venues are 21+, the others are all ages. A few are all ages until 10pm and 21+ after 10pm. Please bring your state issued photo ID. Once we have the schedule in place by day and by venue, we will offer a discounted 3-day “under 21″ ticket/pass that will grant you admission just to all-ages venues. Check for this in late January. We want as many people as possible to be able to see as much music as our local laws allow!
Several venues will have day time/early evening shows which are perfect for the whole family.
