of Montreal is an American experimental pop band originating from Athens, Georgia. Founded in 1996 by singer/guitarist Kevin Barnes, the band was named after a failed romance between Barnes and a woman "of Montreal." The band is known for being a part of the Elephant 6 collective, which has produced other amazing artists such as Elf Power, the Apples in Stereo, and Neutral Milk Hotel. With their 1997 debut album, Cherry Peel, Barnes presented a lo-fi and indie pop presence. Just over two decades later, the band has contributed more than twenty albums, EPs, and singles. Throughout its existence, of Montreal's musical style has evolved considerably and drawn inspiration from numerous 1960s psychedelic pop acts.
In their most recent track, Paranoiac Intervals/Body Dysmorphia, of Montreal has clearly established the beauty in a more 80's funk-infused sound. Their upcoming LP White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood, is due to release March 9 via Polyvinyl.
"(Paranoiac Intervals/Body Dysmorphia is another step on the constantly moving and evolving Barnes who has always managed to slip under the radar when discussing genre-defying artists. Like his compatriot Beck, Barnes and of Montreal are this time turning a little more electro as they search for a societal escape." - Far Out Magazine
